Also known as articulation and phonological disorders, children with speech sound disorders have difficulty saying certain sounds and words. This can make it hard to understand what a child is trying to say. A child may add, delete, distort or change, or substitute one sound for another. For example, they may say "tat" for "cat","tar" for "star", or "thith" for "this".

In therapy we work to produce each sound accurately by itself, in words, phrases, and eventually in sentences and conversation.
